'By a General Officer of one of his Majesty's Scottish Regiments and dedicated to the Duchess of Argyle. The earliest printed version of this song that we can trace. 'Kelvin Grove' used the tune 'the shearing's no for you' and this version predates the version written by Thomas Lyle. The sentiment of this earlier version is the opposite of Lyles sentiment with the first line being 'Then Farewell to Kelvin Grove, bonnie laddie-o' and depicts the soldier leaving for foreign shores.
