Two verses with a simple piano accompaniment in the key of G with a 6/8 time signature. A v. rare item with no copies traced. Robert Anderson 1770-1833 [The Cumberland Bard] was a Carlisle labouring class post wrote poems in the ballad style.

2pp. W/M 1822. 2 leaves with facing score. Some staining. Engraved title to the head of the first page. 'By a General Officer of one of his Majesty's Scottish Regiments and dedicated to the Duchess of Argyle. The earliest printed version of this song that we can trace. 'Kelvin Grove' used the tune 'the shearing's no for you' and this version predates the version written by Thomas Lyle. The sentiment of this earlier version is the opposite of Lyles sentiment with the first line being 'Then Farewell to Kelvin Grove, bonnie laddie-o' and depicts the soldier leaving for foreign shores. Performed by Miss Catherine Stephens [1794-1882]. Printed in the key of A major with a 'German flute' part below in G. Very scarce.
